Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ includes the historical record of “wise men from the east” who came to worship the newborn King Jesus. The Greek word for these visitors is magi, and while their gifts are very well known, their origin is less clear. Who are they? (They are never named.) Where exactly did they come from? (Their exact country of origin is not mentioned.) How did they know of a Jewish king’s birth (aside from the appearance of a miraculous star), and how (and why) were these men so well versed in the Hebrew Scriptures and ancient prophecies? Many scholars have suggested that it is likely that these men were from Babylon, and that their knowledge of the scripture, their keen interest in prophetic fulfilment, their strong desire to worship the one true God, and their joy in celebrating the birth of the long-awaited Messiah all trace back 600 years to four men: Daniel and his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (better known as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego).
As young men, they were forcibly removed from their homes as prisoners by an invading army (their parents most likely killed). They were taken to a new land, engulfed in a pagan culture, and thrust into the elite college of the day, the king’s school in Babylon. They were trained for 3 years in the “literature and language of the Chaldeans” and then placed in political service to King Nebuchadnezzar. And yet their faith not only remained strong, but it also enabled them to exert significant influence over an entire empire. How? Because, as young men, they were grounded in the Word of God. Their parents, their childhood education, and their supporting community all worked together to provide them with a biblical worldview. So strong was their biblical foundation that even when faced with violent war, personal loss, a forced relocation far from home, an idolatrous and pagan environment, and plenty of worldly temptation, they remained rock-solid followers of the One True God. And their influence likely outlived them by many generations, so that 600 years later, the legacy of God’s Word lived on and inspired other magi, centuries later, to rejoice at the arrival of the Messiah and come to worship him in Bethlehem. Here at Wilmington Christian School, we are striving to raise up the next generation of magi, young men and young women who are grounded in biblical truth and able to stand firm and boldly proclaim the Truth to an ever-darkening culture. For 80 years, WCS has been educating with excellence and graduating godly influencers who are impacting the world for Christ.
