She could have very easily kept him at home. Close to her. Close enough to hold his hand, hug him, and watch him grow into a man. But 3,000 years ago, a woman named Hannah chose a different way. History documents her story in the biblical record of 1 Samuel. Hannah and her husband, Elkanah, were unable to have children for a long time. But Hannah was a faithful woman of prayer. She fervently prayed that God would bless her with a son, and she promised to dedicate her son to the Lord if she ever became a mother.
God answered her prayer, and Samuel was born. Now, Hannah faced a choice. What would it mean to dedicate her son to the Lord? For her, it meant placing her son under the teachings and discipleship of the High Priest, Eli, far from home. And so, while Samuel was still a very young boy, Hannah traveled to Eli and placed Samuel in his care. The boy grew and became a faithful follower of God. In fact, while he was still a boy, God called Samuel to deliver a vital message to the High Priest. Throughout his life, Samuel continued to obediently follow God’s lead and live as a pivotal, spiritual, and political leader in Israel. He commissioned and deposed King Saul. He crowned King David. He lived a life of impact. It all began with a godly mother who faithfully prayed, bravely defied convention, and wisely saw in young Samuel the man that God created him to be. Hannah chose Christian education. She decided to place her child in the best educational environment possible, and trusted that God would use the godly influences of Eli and the temple staff to draw out of Samuel the gifts and talents that God had entrusted to him. It was not a perfect school (you can read about Eli’s wicked sons in 1 Samuel 2), but it was a place where God’s Truth was taught and where the blessings of obedience and the consequences of rebellion were clearly displayed. The wise choice of a godly mother forever altered history. What a joy it is here at Wilmington Christian School to partner with Christian parents who, like Hannah, are choosing to defy convention, sacrifice other priorities, and obey God’s call to place their children in the best educational environment possible. We get to see some of the fruit of those choices every day here at school. But only in eternity will we be able to fully see what God was able to do through the boys and girls who were trained to know and love God’s Truth and impact the culture for Christ!Educating for Eternity, Jonathan Nazigian WCS Headmaster Comments are closed.
