At the Elementary School Level
The Elementary Learning Support Program provides individualized academic and social skills coaching in a one-on-one or small group setting to students struggling across various developmental areas. Sessions with the learning support specialist vary in frequency from one to five times per week. Informal assessments are completed regularly to identify areas of need and monitor progress. Supplemental curricula and educational activities are carefully selected and aligned with areas of identified needs and current practices in each student’s regular education classroom. Instructional methods are research-based and multi-sensory in nature.
At the Middle & High School Levels
The Learning Support Program in the Middle School and High School focuses on the development of age-appropriate executive functioning skills. Strategies are taught and reinforced for keeping work organized, maintaining a calendar of due dates and working steadily toward the completion of an assignment. Added to these basic activities are strategies for efficient note-taking, test-taking, and studying. Students are taught to prioritize work needed for various subjects and meet the teachers’ expectations. The learning support teacher serves as a mentor for the students and encourages them to become strong self-advocates. Students enrolled in the Middle School/High School Learning Support Program participate in one-on-one and/or small group sessions with the Learning Support teacher at least two times per week. Please contact the Admissions Office for Learning Support Program tuition information.
504 Plans
If a student has a preexisting or newly-diagnosed disability which negatively impacts his/her daily life and/or academic performance, WCS’s Learning Support Team can help to determine if the student qualifies for a 504 Plan. If the student qualifies, the LSP team will then construct an individualized plan of specific accommodations for the student.
