Summer Reading (Middle & High School)
WCS is passionate about reading! Our goals in assigning reading include: providing a common literary heritage with other students and learning how to constructively engage the challenges common to humanity as they read about the human condition. Further, through reflection in addition to reading, students can learn to analyze themes in literature from a Biblical worldview, so that they will be further equipped to describe and defend their own Christianity. Finally, regular reading provides students with a rich reservoir of literary topics to be used when writing formal essays required at the college level. The English Department at WCS requires every student in grades 6-12 to read select books during the summer. Reading the required books helps to keep students intellectually active during the break, preparing them to engage with formal academic work again once the school year begins.
